As VG247 reports, Newell decided to take a vacation in New Zealand following the release of Half-Life: Alyx, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, he’s been there ever since. As a way of saying thank you to the country for having him, the Valve co-founder is hosting a free event called “We Love Aotearoa” on Aug. 15.
Local TV show The Project had Newell on as a guest and asked him questions about the event, but swiftly moved on to virtual reality and motion sickness, where he also mentioned brain-computer interfaces (both invasive and non-invasive) as being the next big step forward. Inevitably, one of the presenters asked him if he has a preference with regards to the next-gen consoles. Would he choose Xbox Series X or PS5? Newell didn’t hesitate in saying, “the Xbox.”
When asked to elaborate, Newell was light on details, and pointed out he doesn’t have “a stake in that race,” but “of the two, I would definitely go with an Xbox.” Newell’s career started with 13 years spent working at Microsoft, which you may think is why he selected the company’s console, but he’s also embraced Linux and made sure Steam offers wide support, suggesting his preference for Xbox has little to do with Microsoft being his former employer.
Of the two consoles, the Xbox Series X is the more powerful of the two on paper, but you can argue for and against each in all manner of different ways. Newell prefers Xbox, and for now at least, the reason why remains known only to Gabe.
